Caregivers working in addictions see clients and patients with a range of risk factors and symptoms that are associated with family violence. In this interactive workshop, participants will receive evidence-based guidance on how to recognize and respond safely to signs of family violence, including child maltreatment and intimate partner violence. Presenters will introduce participants to an online platform of evidence-based education resources that includes care pathways, scripts, how-to videos, interactive educational scenarios, a handbook, and more. The goal is to equip healthcare and social service providers with the knowledge, tools and resources they need to support clients and patients who may have experienced family violence.

Learning Objectives
  • To identify clinical approaches to recognize and respond safely to intimate partner violence (IPV) and children’s exposure to IPV (CE-IPV).
Methods
  • This Violence, Evidence, Guidance, Action (VEGA) workshop is based on the Family Violence Education Resources, developed by the VEGA Project at McMaster University. The evidence-based resources were developed with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada in collaboration with 22 national healthcare and social service organizations. The interactive workshop includes videos, vignettes, practice, reflections, and discussions.
Results
  • Healthcare and social service providers working in addictions see clients and patients with a range of risk factors and symptoms that are associated with family violence. The workshop will assist participants in recognizing the signs and symptoms of IPV in this population and using safe and evidence-based approaches to inquiring and responding to IPV. Conclusions: The workshop will assist clinicians in addressing the needs of substance-using clients, and their families, who may have experiences of IPV.
